The wave energy converter control competition (WECCCOMP): Wave energy control algorithms compared in both simulation and tank testing

چکیده
The wave energy control competition established a benchmark problem which was offered as an open challenge to the system community. had two stages: In first stage, competitors used standard simulation platform (WEC-Sim) evaluate their controllers while, in second were invited test real-time implementation on prototype tank. performance function based converted across range of sea states, but also included aspects related economic performance, such peak/average power, peak force, etc. This paper compares simulated and experimental results and, particular, examines if obtained linear are borne out reality. Overall, within scope device tested, states employed, metric used, conclusion is that high-performance WEC work well practice, with good carry-over from experimentation. However, availability mathematical model deemed be crucial.

Wave energy converter control by wave prediction and dynamic programming
We demonstrate that deterministic sea wave prediction (DSWP) combined with constrained optimal control can dramatically improve the efficiency of sea wave energy converters (WECs), while maintaining their safe operation. We focus on a point absorber WEC employing a hydraulic/electric power take-off system. Maximizing energy take-off while minimizing the risk of damage is formulated as an optima...
متن کاملNew Perspectives on Wave Energy Converter Control
This work examines some of the fundamental problems behind the control of wave energy converters (WECs). Several new perspectives are presented to aid the understanding of the problem and the interpretation of the literature. The first of these is a group of methods for classifying control of WECs. One way to classify control is to consider the stage of power transfer from the wave to the final...
متن کاملWave Tank Testing and Model Validation of an Autonomous Wave Energy Converter
A key component in bringing ocean wave energy converters from concept to commercialization is the building and testing of scaled prototypes to provide model validation. A one quarter scale prototype of an autonomous two body heaving point absorber was modeled, built, and tested for this work. Wave tank testing results are compared with two hydrodynamic and system models—implemented in both ANSY...

As worldwide energy consumption continues to increase, so does the demand for renewable energy sources. The total available wave energy resource for the United States alone is 2,640 TWh/yr; nearly two thirds of the 4,000 TWh of electricity used in the United States each year. It is estimated that nearly half of that available energy is recoverable through wave energy conversion techniques. In t...
متن کاملStochastic Control of Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter
The ISWEC (inertial sea wave energy converter) is presented, its control problems are stated, and an optimal control strategy is introduced. As the aim of the device is energy conversion, the mean absorbed power by ISWEC is calculated for a plane 2D irregular sea state. The response of the WEC (wave energy converter) is driven by the sea-surface elevation, which is modeled by a stationary and h...
